Collision over Ueberlingen by 0Greyfox0 Collision over Ueberlingen by 0Greyfox0
On 1 July 2002, at 21:35, Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937, from Moscow to Barcelona, and DHL flight 611, from Bergamo to Brussels, collided over the towns of Überlingen and Owingen. The Tupolev 154M, in a desperate try to evade, crashed into the Boeing 757-23APF's tailfin. There were no survivors, 71 people perished that night.

Aboard BAL2937 were a total of 60 passengers and 9 crew. 45 of whom were Bashkortostan schoolchildren on a school trip organized by the local UNESCO committee to the Costa Daurada area of Spain. It was piloted by Captain Alexander Mihailovich Gross and First Officer Oleg Pavlovich Grigoriev (who had joined this flight to supervise Gross' performance). With Grigoriev in the F/O seat Murat Ahatovich Itkulov (First Officer) sat behind the two, not officially serving duty. The navigator and flight engineer aboard was Sergei Kharlov.
With the Tupolev breaking up right after the impact and the following fall, passengers and crew either perished before or were unconcious as the wreck hit the ground.

The DHL machine carried air cargo and was guided by pilot Paul Phillips and First Officer Brant Campioni. Both managed to keep their wounded machine up for approximately 7 more kilometers after the collision. But with about 80% of their tailfin lost a crash was almost inevitable. The Boeing eventually went down in a wooded area near Taisersdorf.

Two years later on 24 February 2004, Vitaly Kaloyev, grieving father of a familiy that was aboard Flight 2937, killed the skyguide controller, Peter Nielson, who was on duty the night of the collision. Kaloyev later claimed that he couldn't remember what he did after having changed just a few words with Nielson in Kloten. Due to his mental state Kaloyev was realeased from prison in 2007.

In total the Disaster over Überlingen cost 72 lives.
Just after this incident, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) released new regulations about the priority of TCAS over ATC orders.

well as you may read above the Tupolev smashed into the tailfin of the boeing basically cutting itself into two pieces, post to that there were several fires and apparently explosions as the tupolev went down. it's also the huge part of the dramatisation.

I'll agree with that it's probably fairly dramatized, though we don't know how it really looked like either.

Thx.
